Digital Earth on RV Alkor

Jens Greinert (GEOMAR) and Roland Ruhnke (KIT) set sail together with a delegation of representatives from politics, governmental authorities and science. Digital Earth has been involved in the development of innovative digital techniques that intend to facilitate the detection of munition in the Sea, such as bombs, sea and air mines, grenades, torpedoes and poison gas ammunition especially dumped during World War II.

This topic is of great importance since it involves large-area ammunition dumps that are still explosive and can therefore detonate at any time. On the other hand, these mines contain a number of hazardous substances which can escape into the surrounding seawater through their dilapidated coats and thus cause damage to the environment and to people.
